The seventh highest Slovenian mountain on which in summer no marked trail leads, Veliki Otar has been a goal of ours together with Drejc to ski down from the top from previous year when we almost accidentally skied a new route which starts on a balcony between Oltars.
With a high snowfall again this year we knew we will try to ski it from the top early in the season. It was only a question of time due to also my accident in november. Bad night sleep or if there was any sleep at all we started the long approach in the middle of the night.
Arriving at the base of the wall at sunrise we knew we had good chances to ski the line which looked in ok shape from afar. Slowly starting to climb the route the conditions looked worse and some tough decisions had to be made. Glad we made the right choices and picked the right line which we didn’t have in mind. Arriving at the peak we were excited to realize that we could ski from the top as probably not more than two handfuls of people have done before.
Long day, starting in the middle of the night and finishing with headlamps, was a day we will remember for a long time. Thanks to the entire crew!, from the top of Oltar to Grlo and behind Ak, variant from the ridge (V+, site S6).
