Skiing from the top of Slovenia, Mt. Triglav

At the end of the season, when it seems like that we are studying and searching for lines more than actually skiing, it is only a logical decision to check the conditions on the top of Slovenia’s highest mountain, mount Triglav.

Triglav with an elevation of 2863 meters is the highest mountain in Slovenia and the highest peak of the Julian Alps. The mountain is the symbol of the Slovene nation and it is the centerpiece of Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park.

The temperatures are higher each day, it is raining higher and higher and there is less snow every day. There are only two meters left at the highest weather station here in Slovenia, Kredarica, below Triglav.

This year the approach is especially long since one of the main starting valleys is closed, but the excitement of seeing the line takes over and time passes by quickly. Arriving at Kredarica conditions don’t look good, snow is still completely frozen and sun is behind clouds. Luckily the sun appears and it seems like there could be an opportunity, I quickly make my way to the top, touch the Aljaž tower and get ready for the descent.

The ridge is still completely hard, it is difficult to make turns here, finally I make my way around the corner and soon I am standing on top of the face. Now I am in the moment, snow is soft, maybe even too soft, conditions are far from perfect, the passages are not as wide as I would wish, but turn after turn I make my way down without bigger difficulties and soon I am standing underneath the line.

Veseli tobogan eng. Happy slide was skied continuously from the top of Triglav with less than two meters of snow on Kredarica. Grateful for another great season and for everybody with whom I got to spend time with, thank you!
